  • First General Secretary of OWTU, Cde. E.R. Blades turns 109!!

On Thursday 7th April, 2011, the OWTU's first General Secretary, Elbert Redvers Blades celebrated his 109th birthday. Known for his unshakable loyalty to family, union and country, Cde. Blades was present at the very first meeting of oil workers  on July 15th 1937 at Coons Town, Forest Reserve, which gave birth to the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union. Indeed, it is because of his diligence at that meeting, that today, we have the complete and detailed minutes of the first meeting of the OWTU.

He went on to serve as the first General Secretary.

He has received counteless accolades over the years, of which includes, the national award, the Humming Bird Medal and the OWTU's highest honour, the OWTU Labour Star.

A master builder and working class hero; we salute you Cde. E.R.Blades!
